Face Treatments

Face surgery encompasses a range of procedures to alter or reconstruct facial features for aesthetic and medical purposes. Dr Matthew Peters is a Queensland-trained Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon with experience in this field. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) after completing rigorous training in both General and Plastic surgery, and is also a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, can be performed on patients who want to reduce age-related lines that develop across the forehead and bridge of the nose. This surgical procedure raises the eyebrows to a higher position and can also address asymmetry.

Facelift and neck lift surgeries can be performed to address signs of ageing in the face and neck area. They involve making incisions around the hairline and ears, lifting and tightening the underlying muscles and skin, and then removing excess skin.

For patients with prominent ears due to a lack of folds or excessive cartilage, ears that are uneven in size, shape, or position, and ear deformities due to birth defects or injury, otoplasty can help restructure the angle and shape of the ears. This surgical procedure reshapes part of the cartilage in the ears so that they lie closer to the side of the head.

Upper blepharoplasty, otherwise known as eyelid reduction surgery, can help remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids to address upper eyelid skin descent and visual impairment due to excess eyelid skin. It is performed by making an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid, removing excess skin, fat, and muscle, and then closing the incision with fine sutures.

Face Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

This surgical procedure involves making precise incisions to access the underlying facial structure. The tissues are then lifted, tightened, or repositioned, and the excess skin is removed. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed using sutures and dressings are applied to protect the surgical wound.
While face surgery can alter facial features, it cannot completely change a patient’s face. The surgery aims to alter the existing facial features rather than create an entirely new appearance. The extent of change depends on the specific procedures performed and individual anatomy.
Initial healing from face surgery typically takes about two to four weeks. Complete recovery, including the resolution of swelling and bruising, can take several months. The exact timeline varies depending on factors such as the patient’s adherence to post-surgical instructions, lifestyle, individual healing capacity, and the extent of the procedure.
Discomforts from face surgery can include swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate pain. Depending on the extent of the procedure, patients may also experience tightness and numbness in the treated areas. To address these symptoms, patients should take the prescribed medications and follow the aftercare instructions.
Face surgery results are long-lasting but not entirely permanent. Over time, factors such as the ageing process, environment, and patient’s lifestyle will continue to affect the face. Patients may need to undergo another face surgery in the future to address these changes.
Surgery can change facial symmetry by adjusting and balancing specific features. However, achieving perfect symmetry is challenging, as natural asymmetry is common in all faces. During the surgery, the goal is to tailor the procedure based on the patient’s concerns and facial anatomy.
After facial surgery, patients should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exposure to direct sunlight. It is also important to refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol, as these can slow down the healing process. Following specific aftercare instructions is crucial for proper recovery and preventing complications.
Facial surgery typically leaves scars. However, surgical techniques can minimise scar visibility. In addition, scarring can be managed with proper aftercare and other treatments.

After face surgery, patients can expect swelling, bruising, and pain. These can be managed by taking the prescribed medications and following the aftercare instructions.

Follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor healing and remove sutures. A gradual change in appearance will be noticeable as the healing progresses.

Depending on the specific procedure and the patient’s adherence to post-surgical instructions, the results of facial surgery can last several years. However, factors such as ageing will continue to affect the results of the surgery.

There is no specific recommended age for facial surgery, as it depends on individual needs and goals. Suitable candidates are those who want to address signs of ageing on their face or neck. However, they should have good overall health and realistic expectations about the surgery’s outcomes.
